Mission
FAMM's mission is to restore women artists to their rightful place in art history by highlighting their contribution, from Impressionism to the present day.
Who We Are
FAMM (Female Artists of the Mougins Museum) is the first museum in the world outside of the United States to have a permanent collection dedicated to major female artists in the history of art. The museum opened on 21 June 2024 in the historic village of Mougins, in the building formerly occupied by the Musée d'Art Classique de Mougins (MACM). It displays around 100 works by more than 90 artists from around the world, spanning the major movements from Impressionism to contemporary art.
The museum was founded by art collector and philanthropist Christian Levett.
What We Do
Through its permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, international loans programme, conferences, events, academic publications and philanthropic initiatives, FAMM works towards a more balanced history of art by promoting greater recognition of women artists.
Why Visit FAMM?
Located in the heart of the historic village of Mougins, FAMM offers the opportunity to discover one of the French Riviera's leading cultural destinations. Situated between Cannes, Grasse and the hills of the Provençal hinterland, Mougins is renowned for its heritage, art galleries, gastronomy and rich artistic history.
Throughout the twentieth century, the village attracted many leading figures from the worlds of art and culture, including Pablo Picasso, Paul Éluard, Man Ray, Lee Miller and Coco Chanel. Today, a visit to FAMM combines the discovery of a permanent collection dedicated to major female artists with the experience of exploring one of the Côte d'Azur's most celebrated artistic villages.
The Collection
FAMM's collection comprises approximately 750 works, around 100 of which are on display at any one time. Spanning more than 150 years of art history, it brings together major figures of Impressionism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and contemporary art.
The collection includes works by Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzalès, Blanche Hoschedé-Monet, Louise Nevelson, Barbara Hepworth, Frida Kahlo, Leonor Fini, Lee Krasner, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Dorothea Tanning, Louise Bourgeois, Leonora Carrington, Elaine de Kooning, Lalan (Xie Jinglan), Joan Mitchell, Alma Thomas, Helen Frankenthaler, Niki de Saint Phalle, Howardena Pindell, Marina Abramović, Marlene Dumas, Nan Goldin, Carrie Mae Weems, Sarah Lucas, Shirin Neshat, Tracey Emin, Cecily Brown, Jenny Saville, Alice Neel, Elizabeth Colomba, Catherine Goodman, among many others.
Our Loans Programme
FAMM regularly lends works from its collection to leading museums around the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Tate Modern in London, the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Petit Palais in Paris, the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, among many other institutions.
These loans contribute to the international visibility of the women artists represented in the collection. They also mean that the displays at FAMM change regularly, allowing visitors to discover different works throughout the year.
Publications
FAMM's publishing programme, developed in partnership with Merrell Publishers, helps make research on women artists accessible to an international audience.
In 2023, Christian Levett published Abstract Expressionists: The Women, written by Ellen G. Landau and Joan M. Marter, highlighting the leading women artists of the Abstract Expressionist movement.
The museum's official catalogue, FAMM: Female Artists of the Mougins Museum, France, was published in May 2025. Introduced by Kristan M. Hanson, it features contributions by Samantha Baskind, Jennifer R. Cohen, Kristan M. Hanson, Ellen G. Landau, Debra N. Mancoff, Jennifer Samet and Yayoi Shionoiri, providing an in-depth study of the collection.
Women Artists in Their Own Words brings together quotations from letters, interviews and writings by more than 100 women artists, from Impressionism to the present day. The book is an initiative by Christian Levett, with an introduction by Jennifer Samet and a selection of quotations compiled by Eleanor Walker.
