Norwegian (b. Stockholm)
Anna-Eva Bergman (1909–1987) was an abstract painter born in Stockholm. Trained in Oslo and Vienna, she moved to Paris in 1929, where she met Hans Hartung. After early work in illustration, she turned to pure abstraction in 1946. A decisive journey to Norway, especially the Lofoten Islands, deeply shaped her art. She developed archetypal forms—stone, mountain, moon—and became known for her use of gold and silver leaf. Her work evolved toward increasingly simplified and luminous compositions. Her and her husband settled in Antibes, where they created their home and studio space, now The Hurtang-Bergman Foundation, which is open to visitors.
