A leading figure in contemporary photography, Candida Höfer has explored institutional interiors since the 1980s through a rigorous documentary approach. Trained by Bernd and Hilla Becher, she developed a precise, frontal aesthetic, favoring symmetry, natural light, and the absence of human presence.
Her photographs of libraries, museums, and performance spaces are composed with a central vanishing point, creating striking depth. The absence of people enhances their contemplative quality, allowing these interiors to function as portraits of space—revealing their history, purpose, and memory. Balancing archival precision and visual meditation, her work reflects both permanence and fragility. For her, "Photography is Organisation".
