Cecily Brown, a British painter based in New York since 1994, graduated from the Slade School of Fine Arts in London in 1993. From her early works, Brown captured attention with her bold erotic paintings, such as "Guys and Dolls," where the thick, fluid paint seems to engulf scenes of almost pornographic nature in a flow of lava.
Her expressionist style is characterized by spontaneous gesturality and figurative distortions. She distinguishes her works with the use of vibrant colors, such as pink and turquoise, which sometimes flirt with kitsch. Her titles, often imbued with cynical humor, like "Confessions of a Window Cleaner" (2000), add a satirical dimension to her work.
Her themes oscillate between eroticism and a form of brutality, addressing notions of Eros and Thanatos, and are anchored in references to art history, as illustrated by her work "Bacchanal" (2001). Cecily Brown has experienced rapid and sustained success, regularly exhibiting at the prestigious Gagosian Gallery in New York since 2000, and having solo exhibitions in major institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 2006. Her exuberant and often provocative work continues to provoke and inspire in the world of contemporary art.
