Dorothea Tanning, born in Galesburg, Illinois, was a pioneering American Surrealist painter, sculptor, and writer, whose imaginative works explored the depths of the subconscious and challenged traditional notions of reality.

Tanning's artistic journey began in the 1930s, amidst the vibrant cultural scene of New York City. There, she quickly became immersed in the Surrealist movement, drawn to its exploration of dreams, desire, and the uncanny. Her early paintings often featured mysterious landscapes, haunting figures, and dreamlike atmospheres, reflecting her fascination with the subconscious mind.

Throughout her career, Tanning's work evolved in both style and medium, encompassing painting, sculpture, and later, immersive installations. Her art often combined elements of fantasy and reality, blurring the boundaries between the conscious and the unconscious, the mundane and the extraordinary.

In addition to her visual art, Tanning was also a gifted writer, penning poetry, novels, and memoirs that echoed the themes of her artwork. Her writing, like her painting, delved into the realms of the imagination, exploring the complexities of the human psyche with wit, insight, and a touch of the surreal.
