Judit Reigl's work explores various artistic forms, from surrealism to gestural abstraction and figuration. Her paintings reveal a constant existential angst, centered on the notion of appearance and disappearance. After fleeing her country's dictatorial regime eight times, she settled in France in 1950, where she met André Breton in 1954 through her companion Simon Hantaï. She presented her first surrealist works at the Galerie À l'Étoile Scellée the same year, before turning to gestural abstraction, exhibiting alongside Georges Mathieu. Between 1959 and 1965, her 'Écritures en Masse' depicted imposing black forms floating on an off-white background, demonstrating austere grandeur through monumental dimensions.
