Américaine (née à Nice)
Yvonne Thomas, a prominent figure in the first wave of abstract expressionism, masterfully combined the intuitive gesture characteristic of the movement with a deeply expressive approach to color. After studying at Cooper Union and the Art Students League of New York, she joined renowned artists like Robert Motherwell and Mark Rothko at the Subjects of the Artist school, a pivotal experimental incubator for her career. Her participation in the famous 'Ninth Street Show' in 1951, alongside Lee Krasner and Joan Mitchell, confirmed her status as an accomplished painter at that time.
Well-anchored in American modernism, Thomas also maintained a strong connection with the Europe of her childhood, enriching her art through friendships with émigrés like Willem de Kooning and Marcel Duchamp. Her work reflects a unique fusion of American and European influences, establishing her as an artist with unique conceptual influences in the abstract expressionist landscape.
