REMINISCENCE by Elizabeth Colomba
Mougins Art Centre
Musée FAMM – Femmes artistes du Musée de Mougins presented the first institutional exhibition in Europe dedicated to the artist Elizabeth Colomba. Entitled REMINISCENCE and curated by Simon de Pury, the exhibition brought together 31 works, including paintings, preparatory drawings and watercolours, some of which had never been exhibited before.
The artist revisited major narratives from Western art history, drawing on Old Masters such as Vermeer and Caravaggio, in order to place the Black female figure at the centre of her compositions. Her work offered a symbolic and historical reinterpretation of European canons, restoring a sense of dignity and representation.
The exhibition marked the artist’s institutional debut in France and formed part of the FAMM’s programme dedicated to highlighting women artists.
