L'HEURE FAMM x MARIE GODET
Jane Graverol, Rachel Baes and the “female accomplices” of Surrealism in Belgium
Marie Godet
Centre d'Art de Mougins
If the painter Jane Graverol now attracts the attention of collectors, other women associated with Brussels Surrealism remain largely in the shadows. This lecture, led by Marie Godet, highlighted the diversity of roles played by women within the movement: as artists (Jane Graverol, Rachel Baes) and writers (Irène Hamoir), they also more broadly redefined the notion of “accomplices” associated with the Brussels group, a term often historically restricted to male figures.
As such, the contribution of Marthe Bonvoisin and Georgette Magritte was long limited to their status as “models” or “muses”, a framing that now calls for reassessment.
Marie Godet holds a PhD in Art History and specialises in Belgian Surrealism. She is currently preparing the catalogue raisonnés of Jane Graverol and Rachel Baes, and has notably curated the exhibition Surréalisme.
