“I am not sick. I am broken. But I am happy to be alive as long as I can paint.”

Frida Kahlo needs no introduction... a revolutionary Mexican artist known worldwide for her surreal and symbolic self-portraits.

At the age of 18, she was involved in a bus accident that changed her life, leaving her with physical pain and health issues that would last a lifetime. During her recovery, Kahlo turned to painting, creating expressive and introspective works that delve into her physical and emotional anguish.

In 1929, she married the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. Just as her physical pain, her emotional pain related to her tumultuous relationship with Rivera is present throughout her work. Her symbolic paintings blend elements from Mexican folk culture, surrealism, and expressionism. Kahlo's work is recognized nationally and internationally, becoming a true icon, especially in her home country of Mexico. "I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality," she once said.
