Belgian

Jane Graverol was a prominent figure in Belgian Surrealism. Growing up, she was immersed in the artistic milieu, her father being a writer and Symbolist painter.

She studied fine arts at the Etterbeek Academy and in Brussels, where she held her first exhibition in 1927 before moving to Paris several years later.

In the 1940s, she officially joined the Surrealist movement, although her work had already been leaning in that direction for about a decade. The artist describes her work as waking dreams, conscious dreams.' The role of women is very important in her work, where she depicts the freedom of the female form. Unlike her Surrealist colleagues who often portrayed female muses with a sterile smoothness, Graverol imbues them with a powerful, erotic, and magical aspect. Mythical and mythological creatures are also frequent subjects in her paintings.

Beyond painting, Jane Graverol was also involved in literature and publishing. She co-created the literary magazine 'Temps mêlés' and 'Les lèvres nues,' a post-war Surrealist magazine.
