CassattMary

(1844 - 1926)

Painter

American-French

Mary Cassatt lived a childhood divided between the United States and Paris. Her artistic journey began with training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, followed by studies in Europe with various renowned artists, such as Charles Chaplin and Thomas Couture.

Her friendship with Edgar Degas played a crucial role in her joining the Impressionist movement of the 19th century. Cassatt contributed significantly to the revival of pastel, tempera, and etching, particularly distinguished by her meticulously crafted prints.

Mary Cassatt's choice to focus on portraits, especially on the theme of motherhood, reflects her avant-garde feminist commitment for the time. She placed women and children at the center of her works, often placing them in intimate contexts related to the feminine sphere.

Alongside artists like Berthe Morisot and Eva Gonzalès, Mary Cassatt was one of the few women to make a name for herself in the Impressionist milieu. Her influence was not limited to Europe, as she also played a key role in spreading Impressionism in the United States. Her artistic legacy endures, and she remains an essential figure in art history.
