Canadian

Miriam Schapiro was an influential Canadian-American artist known for her pioneering contributions to the Feminist Art Movement and her role in the development of Feminist art practices in the late 20th century.

Schapiro's artistic journey began with her studies at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto and later at the Art Students League of New York. She initially worked in an abstract expressionist style, before exploring collage and mixed media in her later work.
In the 1960s, Schapiro co-founded the Feminist Art Program at the California Institute of the Arts alongside artist Judy Chicago. Together, they developed innovative pedagogical approaches that encouraged women artists to explore their own experiences and identities through art-making.

Schapiro's most iconic works often incorporated elements of collage, quilt-making, and other traditionally feminine craft techniques, challenging the hierarchies of fine art and elevating women's domestic labor to the realm of high art. Her "femmages," as she called them, celebrated women's creativity and resilience while critiquing the patriarchal structures that had historically marginalized women's artistic contributions.

Throughout her career, Schapiro remained committed to advancing the cause of women in the arts, advocating for greater visibility and recognition of women artists and their work. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of artists and feminists, reminding us of the power of art as a tool for social change and personal transformation.
