SavilleJenny

(Born 1970)

Painter

British

Jenny Saville, an iconic painter among the Young British Artists (YBAs), transforms our understanding of the human form through her large-scale works. Born in Cambridge, England, in 1970, Saville studied at the Glasgow School of Art, where she developed a fascination with the "imperfections" of flesh and their societal implications. Her art delves deeply into a comprehensive study of the body's resilience and fragility, themes which arose when exposed to plastic surgery, cadaver dissections, and classical art during her fellowship in Connecticut.

Saville's work transcends classical figuration and modern abstraction, manipulating oil paint to mimic the tactile quality of flesh, blurring the line between painted form and living body. Her canvases become arenas where paint and perception intertwine, pushing the boundaries of figurative painting. She addresses themes of bodily transformation, societal taboos, and the fluidity of gender identity, infusing her work with historical awareness and contemporary relevance.

Her paintings often reference classical and Renaissance works but stand out by refusing to conform to traditional representations of bodies. Instead, Saville presents voluminous, autonomous, and uncompromising bodies, challenging societal perceptions of beauty and norms. Her work not only revisits but also revises the historical depiction of bodies, making her one of the most influential figurative painters of her time.
