Sarah Lucas has been shaking up the art world since the 1990s with her provocative approach and typically British humor. Her works, blending installations and photographs, explore and deconstruct gender codes by merging artistic references with popular allusions. Lucas, a graduate of Goldsmiths College in London, is a central figure of the Young British Artists, a group that gained prominence with the ‘Sensation’ exhibition in 1997. She initially worked on formal sculptures before shifting towards themes influenced by feminist theories.
Lucas’ works, often critical of the British media's treatment of sexuality and sensationalism, use the body and its representations as a means of provocation and reflection. Through a series of self-portraits from 1990 to 1998, she portrays herself in poses that challenge traditional expectations of femininity, adopting masculine codes to question and disrupt gender stereotypes.
A striking example of her work is the installation ‘Au naturel’ (1994), which uses triviality to ironically critique conventional perceptions of sexuality. Lucas continues to be an influential voice in the debate on gender, popular culture, and art, thanks to her bold and often humorous interventions that challenge social and cultural assumptions.
