Multidisciplinary artist

Ugandan

Stacey Gillian Abe was born in 1990 in Kampala, Uganda. She began her studies in visual arts and industrial design within the Fine Arts Department at Kyambogo University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts. Her artistic expression spans various disciplines such as photography, sculpture, installations, performances, and painting.

Her work explores notions of identity, gender, and spirituality, while questioning the place of women and sexuality within society. She particularly focuses on the representation of black women through autobiographical works shaped by spiritual dimensions. Her compositions reveal imaginary spaces imbued with mysticism.

Abe often uses the color indigo to depict the skin tone of her subjects. She explains: "In my work, indigo symbolizes a tribe, a race of Black people, a community liberated from social, economic, cultural, political, and historical constraints. It is the unapologetic and disinterested assertion of one's vulnerability."
