Painter and writer
French
Françoise Gilot, born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, was a French painter, writer, and muse, best known for her significant contributions to modern art and her tumultuous relationship with Pablo Picasso.
Gilot's artistic journey began at a young age when she enrolled at the Sorbonne to study law and English literature. However, her passion for art led her to pursue painting, and she soon caught the attention of the Parisian art scene with her distinctive style and bold use of color.
In 1943, Gilot met Pablo Picasso, who was captivated by her intellect and talent. After a turbulent decade together, Gilot eventually ended her relationship with Picasso in 1953, before going on to pursue her own artistic career, establishing herself as a respected painter and writer in her own right.
Gilot's paintings often reflect her interest in abstraction and geometric forms, with influences ranging from Cubism to Surrealism. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world and is held in numerous public and private collections.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Gilot is also an accomplished writer, known for her memoir "Life with Picasso" (1964), in which she candidly recounts her experiences with the legendary artist. She has authored several other books, including novels, essays, and art criticism.
