Shirin Neshat, an Iranian photographer and video artist born in 1974 and based in the United States, explores the condition of women in contemporary Islam through her photographic work. Her series "Unveiling" (1993) and "Women of Allah" (1994) have sparked critical and controversial reactions. Some Western commentators criticize her for not explicitly condemning the Islamic revolution. These works depict women in chadors, with Farsi calligraphy covering the visible parts of their bodies, raising questions about veiled female identity.

In 1997, Neshat turned to filmmaking with "Turbulent," which won an award at the Venice Biennale in 1999. She continued to explore gender dynamics with "Rapture" (1999) and "Fervor" (2000), using dual-screen installations. Since 2003, she has been adapting Shahrnoush Parsipur's "Women Without Men" into video works, addressing social and sexual taboos through the intertwined fates of women in 1953. Her art, which highlights complex and controversial issues, continues to provoke and inspire global debate.
